Landfill
Where it is not recycled, household waste is sent for landfill disposal at one of three sites within Cheshire. These sites are owned by Waste Recycling Group (WRG), which operates the contract for landfill disposal on behalf of Cheshire County Council.
However, like all Councils, Cheshire County Council must meet targets for reducing the amount of biodegradable waste they send to landfill or face big fines under the Landfill Allowance Trading Scheme (LATS).
This pressure to divert waste from landfill has left the door wide open for incineration yet it doesn’t have to be this way. Greenpeace produced a comprehensive report in October 2001 which examined the issue of complying with the landfill directive and quite clearly demonstrated that there is absolutely no requirement to build mass burn incinerators to manage the waste stream.
If you would like to assess for yourself the viability of their proposals you can read a copy of the report here.
